Did you know? An airplane is not allowed to take o Did you know? An airplane is not allowed to take off if the wings or tail are contaminated by frost, ice or snow. This would increase its weight and modify the wing profile, reducing the lift and increasing the drag. Therefore if it's the case, it will be first deiced by a shower of deicing/anti-icing fluid (to make it simple). After that, an "holdover time" is calculated depending on the type of anti-icing fluid used, temperature, and type of precipitations. This time frame can vary from a few minutes to over an hour, but the airplane will always have to be airborne before the expiration of this holdover time, otherwise, a new de-icing has to be performed.
